OUR ENVIRONMENT

Since 1999, when the farm was simply a grazing field, we have made many changes to enhance the environment for wildlife.

In 2000 and 2001 we planted a native mixed hedgerow around the site to provide shelter and food to birds, land animals and insects.

We mulch all unsold trees, providing goodness to the soil. The
soil surface is kept mown, rather than poisoned with persistent weedkillers, in order to encourage wildlife and prevent soil erosion. We also maintain an 8ft perimeter of long grass around the farm to encourage the growth of wildflowers in summer.

In 2008, hawk nesting boxes were mounted on long poles (see left). Hawks are frequently seen over the farm, as many small mammals live among the trees.

We use solar-powered lights to decorate our Christmas Trees.

The Christmas trees themselves are a good home for wildlife, especially where they are densely planted, and it is not uncommon to find an old bird's nest in cut trees!
