March and April
This is a busy time, planting many many trees. For every tree that is cut, a new one is planted in its place, plus there are spaces left from where trees have died or failed or simply had to be removed because they are mis-shapen.
Several thousand trees are planted each year, and they have to be planted carefully or else they will not take. If weeks of dry weather follow planting, we can lose a lot of new trees. Deer may also graze the young trees if there is snow, as their tops poke out of the snow and make easy targets.
Trees are already 3 or 4 years old on planting and it will take another 6 or 7 years before they are ready for harvest. We really have to plan ahead.
